We had an awesome and busy week in our pre-k classroom! This is such a fun and special time for all our little friends. We are decorating and getting ready for Christmas, the most wonderful time of the year!! We had a very special visitor show up this week in our classroom. Santa sent one of his little elves to keep watch on us. He also sent us a book which we read. The children voted on a name for this cute fella, and the winner is, Rainbow. Rainbow was moving and grooving all week. We know he must be giving Santa only good reports! This week we focused on the letter I and the number 9. The children learned that I is a vowel, the short and long sound of I, the formation of the capital and lowercase I, and we did many activities surrounding the letter I. Our nursery rhyme this week was, The Itsy Bitsy Spider. Nursery rhymes foster cognitive and language development According to research, learning phonemic abilities via nursery rhymes greatly improves reading, spelling, and other literacy skills. We learned all the ways to show the number 9 this week; the number, the word, tally marks, nine in a ten frame, and they added 9 beads to a pipe cleaner. We also discussed one more and one less. We are counting everyday to our 100th day celebration. We can't believe we are on day 62 already! In religion, we thanked God for our sense of touch. We discussed all the things that were safe to touch and things that are not safe to touch. We also described how different things feel. We are preparing for Jesus' birthday, the reason for the season. We did a counting syllable activity this week using scoops of ice cream. One scoop for one syllable words, two scoops for two syllables words and three scoops for three syllable words. We had some practice this week measuring in inches. The children used a ruler to measure Santa, a Christmas tree and inch worms. This also helps with number recognition, counting and number formation. We couldn't end "I" week without celebrating with an ice cream party! The children enjoyed ice cream, whipped cream, chocolate syrup, and sprinkles to wrap up the week! We kept moving this week with some ribbon dancing, balloon play, scooter races, and ball play at the gym. A big thank you to Mrs. Papa for being our secret reader this week. The class loved having you visit! Please review all work sent home and practice skills taught at school. Our working together will help ensure your child's academic success.
